City of McDonough Wellness Program
In April Mayor Billy Copeland developed a City of McDonough Wellness Program, which will introduce residents to physical, stress-relieving, and health conscious activities that are designed to improve overall well-being.
The sixth initiative will be a switch to mental health and relaxation— “Art in the Park.”
The activity will be held in the Square Park throughout the month of September. A calendar has been established (see below) of days and times that citizens can participate in a basic/ beginner relaxation art class, which will include creative thinking activities. Local artist, Nan McGarity, will lead each class and is also planning some fun “art exploration” activities in the downtown area on each of the days.
CALENDAR—
Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 7pm;
Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 10:30am;
Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 7pm;
Thursday, September 17, 2009, at 7pm
While supplies last, participants will receive a canvas tote bag, which has been provided by PRops Design Group, and pad of drawing paper, which has been sponsored by the local architectural firm Innovo, Inc. Participants must bring all other art supplies (pencils, pastels, charcoals, etc.) and are also encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for seating.
The American Art Therapy Association describes art therapy as “the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.” (http://www.arttherapy.org/aboutart.htm)
The City of McDonough Wellness Program is a great opportunity for families, friends, churches, civic organizations, and businesses to come together as a community and encourage each other to do something positive.
