Quick References

The Walnut Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is the wastewater treatment facility for the City of McDonough. The plant site is located north of the City at the confluence of Camp Creek and Walnut Creek. The original plant was constructed in 1971 with several additions and improvements the plant now can treat 2 million gallons per day with a maximum of 2.5 million gallons for seven days. Currently the plant is operating at approximately one million gallons per day. The City has overall responsibility that state and federal regulations and requirements are met.

The actual operation and maintenance is preformed by the plant operators. There are seven full time employees that include 1 Manager, 1 Maintenance Manager, five licensed operators. The Manager and Maintenance Manager are both Class 1 Operators. All Operators go thru a program of experience on the job, classes at state approved sites, and testing at state sites for licensing. They must continue to attend classes annually to maintain the license. Operators are expected to be able to work in all weather conditions and to have mechanical and industrial electrical skills. They are trained in proper laboratory skills and attend weekly safety meetings. Operators must be able to climb 25 foot ladders on a regular basis, and descend 20 feet into confined spaces.

The state requires that permit testing be done three times per week at a certified lab, and process control testing be done daily. Both types are done in-house in our new lab that is certified annually. Tests are run for Biochemical Oxygen demand, Total suspended solids, phosphorus, Ammonia, Fecal, pH, Alkalinity, Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids, Dissolved Oxygen, Settlometer, and Orthophosphate. The plant has currently won two Gold Awards for 100% compliance in the 2005 and 2006 years.

The operation of the plant is 24 hours, 365 days per year with a staff on hand 12 hours per day. There is also an on call policy for any emergency situation. The wastewater staff is also responsible for the 13 pump stations throughout the City of McDonough. The pump stations are monitored daily for proper operation, and maintenance is preformed when needed.
