Veterans’ Information and Referral Office

 

On June 10, 2008, the City of McDonough Veterans Information and Referral Office opened to the public. The idea sprang from the simple concept of serving and supporting those who have given so much to our country. The Office, which is open twice a week, is staffed by volunteers who have been trained by Ms. April Melancon. As a result of their dedication, the Office is scheduled six months in advance.

The expenses of this Office have been minimal, but the benefits have been extraordinary. Rather than driving to a Veterans Administration Office or working through an automated phone system to receive basic information, Veterans are able to meet one-on-one with someone in their community and referral response time is usually within twenty-four to forty-eight business hours.

My sincere hope is that other municipalities and counties across the State and country will use the City of McDonough’s program as a model.
