Public Works.

The Public Works Department maintains the City’s historic Square, infrastructure, drainage problems, sewer line installation and repairs, addition of city sidewalks, and dressing of the City of McDonough Cemetery. Public Works puts up/removes all street dressings such as flags and banners, prepares the Square for all events and programs including putting up and tearing down tents and stages for many proceedings, cleanup following all public events as well as day-to-day cleanup and grooming of City streets and grounds, and assisting with seasonal holiday decorations. This department also handles all mowing and maintenance of City owned parks and park facilities.

Mission Statement

McDonough Public Works is committed to providing quality services in all areas that fall under the directives of this department.  The ultimate goal of Public Works is to assure the delivery of every amenity that comes with responsible and well trained employees handling problems wherever and whenever they may occur within the City’s boundaries.  Emphasis is always placed on providing superior service in a timely manner.  The Public Works Department is dedicated to sustaining and protecting the City’s resources, maintaining and upgrading the City’s infrastructure, and constantly making improvements to the City’s physical environment.

Major Improvements by Public Works

  • Miles of city sidewalks have been added to promote pedestrian safety.
  • Improve the look of the McDonough Square with new sod, added trees, shrubs and redesigned flower beds.
  • Continuously maintaining the beauty, integrity and appearance of the Square.
  • Business location signs were installed at strategic points around the Square to assist in locating shops, offices and  eateries.
  • Additional parking is available at different locations just off the Square to better facilitate accessibility to downtown.
  • The Avalon Park Complex has added three football fields, an inline hockey rink and a second City fire station for public convenience and safety.
  • Rufus L. Stewart Park has been expanded with the addition of a second outdoor basketball court, a new tennis court and a smaller second pavilion.
  • A 140 + acre park is being developed on Jonesboro Road starting with phase one of the walking trails that will provide over three miles of bicycling/walking trails throughout the park.
  • The city has in place the radio read billing system within the City Water Department.
  • A new street sweeper has been purchased to better maintain the look, cleanliness and appearance of the community.
