12-11-08 Official Tree Lighting Ceremony on the McDonough Square

The first Saturday in December, the 6th this year, was a busy day in McDonough. Santa Saturday began with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the Square for photos, the Rotary Club’s inaugural Jingle Jog kicked off with approximately 200 runners participating, McDonough’s always colorful and exciting Christmas Parade was schedule to begin at 6:00 p.m., and the annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree would take place on the Square at 5:00 p.m. The first Saturday in December is all about Christmas in McDonough.

The Shiloh Baptist Church choir, under the direction of Ronald Seibert, entertained the large crowd gathered for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting with many Christmas favorites before Mayor Billy Copeland, joined by several young people from the crowd gathered for this occasion and the parade to follow, began the countdown for the lights adorning the nearly 40 foot artificial tree to be turned on. Flipping the switch honors were handled with great skill and timing by Main Street Director Linda Schenk officially marking the beginning of the Christmas season of celebration in McDonough!
