06-05-09 McDonough Receives Big Spring Well Use Permit

It is no secret that the City of McDonough has grown in population at an astounding rate for the past several years. In an effort to have available an increased supply of supplemental, clean, quality drinking water, the City has recently acquired the necessary permit allowing full access and use of the well at Big Spring in McDonough.

With the well capable of producing 150,000 gallons per day, the City’s available water supply, in effect, doubled. Prior to receiving the permit on this well, the two existing wells serving McDonough, one with the capacity of 100,000 gallons a day, the second well with a 50,000 gallon daily capacity, have sufficiently covered the past and existing demands for water by City residents.

McDonough Water Treatment Plant Operations Manager Steve Cox and his staff are thrilled to have the permit to this third well, issued 4-30-09, in hand as anticipated future growth will inevitably occur in both Henry County and the City of McDonough.

“This is part of the City’s long range planning for future water needs,” said Cox. “This addition should meet those needs for several years. We’re very pleased at the outcome of our efforts to acquire this permit.”

The inside of the well at Big Spring, as shown by Operation manager Steve Cox, will require some work by McDonough Water Treatment Plant employees to bring it up to the operating level that is expected from this major supplemental water source.
