06-26-09 City Cemetery Renovations Started
The City of McDonough has continued to pass down a rich heritage begun by proud and hardy settlers dating back to its inception in 1823. These pioneers of the early village of McDonough were determined to establish a town reflecting strength of character as well as incorporating great vision for a prosperous future.
With that same strong character and appreciation for both the heritage and future of McDonough, city officials have undertaken an in-depth study of the current appearance and condition of the City Cemetery located on Macon Street. Guidance and advice have been sought from those who have worked closely with renowned cemetery renovations and restorations.
Findings from that study have clearly painted a picture of a cemetery that has been allowed to lapse into an unacceptable condition. These results have led officials to formulate a plan by which the splendor and glory, that once clothed these hallowed grounds, will be restored.
As with everything that lives and defines life, those who shape and mold the annals of history, at some point in time, become the chronicles of history themselves. It is because of the proud history that McDonough’s forefathers have passed from generation-to-generation, and the need to respectfully honor those who are buried there, that officials have made the decision to undertake the restoring of the lost beauty, honor and dignity of the City’s cemetery, and in the restoration process, raise the bar by creating a landmark that will not only make those who have loved ones buried within the cemetery gates proud but will serve as a destination for those who are drawn to the history, peace, and reverence of a well documented and manicured cemetery.
The initial plans called for the removal of 36 stumps and 2 dead or dying trees. Great care was taken by the City to make sure that the removal process, which occurred June 22nd and 23rd, was carried out with the utmost caution and respect. The City has taken extra steps to ensure a positive outcome by securing a Georgia Certified Landscape Professional and cemetery specialist as well as a certified arborist to supervise this project.
If any residents are aware of unmarked graves in the City Cemetery, please call the City’s Media Relations office at 770-957-3915, ext. 2260 or use the e-mail capabilities on the City website at www.mcdonoughga.org to report this information.
