New Major Tourist Attractions Coming Soon
Coming Soon!
South Point Regional Retail Development - South Point is a multiuse village retail development hosting 10 Anchor Stores, dining, and architecture compatible with the historic McDonough Square. The development will contain a Kiosk providing information on McDonough, and a trolley to and from the McDonough Square. Also on-site will be a 100 unit 7 story residential facility. South Point will not be a mall, it will be an Experience.
Alexander Park Expansion - For years the city has been interested in the purchase and development of 140 Acres of land between highway 42 and Jonesboro Rd. The vision of Mrs. Gail Welch Talmadge Notti will soon be a reality as the city has purchased the property and are working with Architects and Designers to create a place of Harmony between natural elements and visitors. The park will boast a number of ball fields, a butterfly exhibit, botanical garden, and numerous recreation and outdoor multi-use facilities. The company EDAW is the proposed design firm to create this natural Mecca. EDAW has been chosen to design the 2012 London Olympic Park and credits a number of popular destinations to its long list of Clientele. EDAW values the relationship between people and their environment. These are the same elements that McDonough has been trying to unite within the city for years with the Livable Centers Initiative. Finally the benefits of this exciting development both economically and physically will be realized by citizens but also by tourists who will no-doubt be attracted to the parks amenities.
Historic District - Soon McDonough will be the bearer of one of the countries largest historic districts. With 296 buildings being inducted into the National Historic Register, McDonough will be the “place to visit†by the historic community. Bus and Walking tours are being organized presently and anyone wishing to participate may call 770-898-3196 for more information.
Art and Entertainment - McDonough’s art community is certainly growing with the addition of the McDonough Art’s Council created by Nan Lee (Economic Development-City of McDonough). Through this council a number of exciting projects are in works for bringing the art world to McDonough. One of these proposals involves an Art Museum within the City. Another project taking flight is for two Murals to be painted at “gateway†entrances to the square. Soon visitors and residents alike will have much more to look at when driving through the already beautiful downtown area. The artist involved is Griffin resident, Shannon Lake who is responsible for the Murals in Barnesville and also many of the Murals currently on the Square. Travelers will no longer need to make the trek into Atlanta to discover art, entertainment, and upscale dining. McDonough is working hard to make all of these amenities available.
We are on the threshold of becoming a Major tourist destination. McDonough will be a showcase for the State of Georgia for History, Recreation, Art, and Entertainment, thanks to the planning and initiative of City, County, and State leaders in having the foresight to pursue a vision of responsible tourism that promotes conservation, preservation, and harmony between visitors and the environment, while contributing economically to the community and beyond.
McDonough is on the verge of great things, won’t you join us?
