09-18-10 - September Music on the Square Breaks Attendance Records
As 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 18th approached, a light breeze cooled the temperature slightly as it continued to blow across the McDonough Square welcoming a trickle of people already claiming their spot in the park. Gradually, the number grew from a trickle to the largest crowd to attend a Main Street McDonough Program’s Music on the Square since it began in 2002.
With the darkness of night settling in, the park was filled to capacity, and folks began gathering on the sidewalk around the Square to listen to the multi-talented entertainment for the evening, the Infinity Show Band from Atlanta. The seven member band captivated the crowd with various styles of music from oldies, to rock-n-roll, to Rhythm and Blues. From their choreographed moves to their beautifully blended harmony, this group kept the crowd involved from the first song to the final number.
Many in the crowd joined the youngsters in front of the bandstand dancing to some of their favorite musical selections. Others, though remaining in their seats, were clapping their hands, tapping their feet, and singing along with the members of the band. At one point during the evening’s performance, the band pulled four men, then four women, followed by a number of children from the audience to dance on stage. When the entertainment ended at 10:00 pm, it seemed as though it had just begun. The Infinity Show Band’s first performance in McDonough will definitely not be their last.
The next Main Street McDonough Program event will be the Merchants’ Scarecrow Contest which will begin on October12th, with judging on the 28th and awards presented on the 29th, followed by the Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 23rd. Preparation and cooking of the chili for judging, which must be done on site, starts at 10:00 am. The festival and chili tasting start at 11:00 am. The “Doc” Driver Band will perform on the Square in the afternoon from 1:00-4:00 pm. For additional information on these or other Main Street events call 770-898-9868 or 770-898-9311.
