06-21-09 City Cycle Tour Kicks Off Mayor’s Wellness Program—Initiative III

The Mayor’s Wellness Program, Initiative III, takes the form of bike riding along some beautiful streets in McDonough beginning in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church on Macon Street.

The inaugural City Cycle Tour ride drew thirty-five enthusiastic cyclists that gathered in the church’s parking lot anticipating a great evening of bike riding and a history lesson along the way. Employees from Epic Bike were on hand to assist anyone needing some minor repairs to his/her bicycle. Tim Kohl, owner of Epic Bike, is the facilitator of this fitness activity following April’s Walk with Billy and May’s Yoga on the Lawn. The City Cycle Tour continues throughout the month of June.

At certain points, the entourage, with McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland riding at the helm, would come to a halt so the Mayor could share some interesting historical facts about a particular building or location they were passing.

The cycle tour included a stop at the McDonough Fire Department on Keys Ferry Street for a cold bottle of water then back on the bikes for the next leg of the tour.

McDonough residents interested in greasing up the old bicycle and joining the riders are welcomed to do so. All cyclists participating are encouraged to wear helmets while riding. The McDonough Police Department provided and escort throughout the tour for safety purposes. To learn more information about this initiative, including a schedule of upcoming rides throughout the month of June, call 770-957-3915 or visit www.mcdonoughga.org.
