City Logo in Aluminum Can Art
By Henry County Middle School’s Art Class
The City of McDonough’s logo with the geranium pot in the middle has become one of the subjects of the art class of Henry Middle School. This talented class, under the direction of their equally inventive and creative teacher, Melissa Wood, have produced some amazingly beautiful pieces of art from, yes, aluminum cans.
During the February 6 City Council meeting held at City Hall, three staff members of McDonough’s very popular Summer Youth Camp, held at HCMS, were in attendance and presented Mayor Billy Copeland and the Council with the classes’ beautiful creation. Those three included: Eric Wortham, camp director; Pamela Gorham, band teacher and teaching guitar at summer camp; and art teacher Melissa Wood.
Ms. Wood’s art class has now received a second grant from Recyclebank due to the outstanding recycling program the class has generated using aluminum cans to create beautiful pieces of art. Recyclebank will match 100% of the funds raised, up to $2500, based on this class collecting Recyclebank points realized through donations made to the class by McDonough citizens participating in the city’s Recyclebank program.
Karin Zarin, Recycle Bank Account Manager; Monica Moseley, Republic Services’ Area Municipal Marketing Manager; and Bryant Thornton, Republic Services’ General Manager, were also in attendance and participated in the presentation.
The number of points necessary to receive the maximum grant amount of $2500 is 625,000. The fundraising deadline is Wednesday, February 29, and the class currently has approximately 5000 points. There is a long way to go and a short time to get there. Mayor Copeland made a donation following the presentation of the logo art, and both he and the Council encourage everyone to support this effort and make it happen.
To donate points to this worthy cause, visit the city’s website www.mcdonoughga.org and click on the Recyclebank icon extension which will go directly to the Recyclebank website. Click on About Us at the top, and then on Green Schools Program. Donate points to Henry County Middle School so this amazing art class will have the necessary funds to continue making masterpieces out of rubbish.
